Location

The Pink Parlor on the first floor of the East Duke Building, located at the intersection of Main Street and Campus Drive.

Traveling from Main Street, turn onto Campus Drive; the East Duke Building will be the first building on the right. If walking from the Residence Inn, enter East Campus from the corner of Main St. and Buchanan. 

  NOTE : the only sign outside the building is "Nelson Music Room."

Mask policy for in-person gathering: Due to rising cases of COVID in many areas of the country, we are requesting that attendees wear masks while congregating indoors.

Virtual attendance option: All Day 1 and Day 2 sessions can be streamed virtually on a short delay, with the exception of the planning session for the Fall 2022 gathering, which will take place on the morning of Day 2; this session will be conducted over Zoom, to allow those in the Steering Committee not present in-person to participate in the discussion.   • Strategies for Successful Collaboration - Amalia Turner, INFRAMES Coordinator and Executive Director of the Center for Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology (CEINT), Duke University
  • Workshop 1: Interactive network analysis activity and facilitated discussion of research priorities – Christine Hendren, Director of the Research Institute for Environment, Energy, and Economics (RIEEE) at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, USA

  • Representatives from each attending institution will provide a 12-15 minute overview of research projects and resources at their institution that relate to INFRAMES challenge areas and resource platforms.
  • Select attendees new to the INFRAMES community will deliver 5-minute lightning talks on research projects or objectives.

Evening (dinner provided)

  • Preparation for morning planning session (INFRAMES leadership only)
  • 7:30 p.m. Dinner and social event for all INFRAMES attendees at Juju Durham (737 Ninth St, Durham, NC 27705). The restaurant is about 0.9 miles from the Residence Inn (and 0.6 miles from the East Duke Building), with sidewalks along the entire route. 

 

Day 2 (8:00 a.m. - 5:15 p.m.)

  • Nanomaterials  vs “advanced materials” risk governance: How the nano risk governance framework can be adapted to "advanced materials"  -  Jérôme Rose, Director of Research at the Centre Européen de Recherche et d'Enseignement des Géosciences de l'Environnement (CEREGE) in Aix-en-Provence, France
  • Workshop 2: Particle-mediated delivery systems in agricultural applications, led by Greg Lowry, Carnegie Mellon University
    • Research talks and perspectives on knowledge and instrumentation gaps given by Jason White (Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station), Jason Unrine (University of Kentucky), Amalia Turner (Duke University), and Kurt Ristroff (Carnegie Mellon University)
    • 30-min group discussion on major challenges and limitations with the goal of identifying key items to address in future workshops
  • Workshop 3: Consequences of micro- and nano-plastics, led by Rebecca Klaper, University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin
    • Research talks and perspectives on knowledge and instrumentation gaps given by Ralf Kaegi (EAWAG), Richard Cross (United Kingdom Centre for Ecology and Hydrology), and Joana Sipe (Duke University), and Zoie Diana (Duke University)
    • 30-min group discussion on major challenges and limitations with the goal of identifying key items to address in future workshops
  • Closing remarks

Evening

  • Dinner for INFRAMES leadership remaining in Durham
     

Day 3 (9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.)

Morning

  • Charter bus arrives at the Residence Inn at 9:00 a.m. for a 9:15 a.m. departure to Greensboro, NC
  • Tour of the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering facilities, showcasing the cutting edge instrumentation and materials-related research within the facility

Afternoon (lunch provided)

  • Light lunch and social event with JSNN researchers
  • Excursion to downtown Greensboro with the option to visit the International Civil Rights Center & Museum at the historic Woolworth’s building
  • Charter bus departs from the Civil Rights Center & Museum at 4:15 p.m., returning to the Residence Inn in Durham, NC at 5:30 p.m.

Logistics

  • Airport: The closest airport to Duke is RDU (about 20 minutes away)
  • Hotel: We have reserved a room block at the Residence Inn Durham McPherson (1108 W Main St, Durham, NC 27701)
  • Parking: Contact Nicolle Hinz (nicolle.hinz@duke.edu) for a parking pass if you intend to drive to East Campus for the gathering (The East Duke Building is about 0.3 miles from the Residence Inn, with sidewalks along the entire route)
  • Accessibility needs: Contact Amalia Turner (Amalia.turner@duke.edu) if you have any accessibility requirements of which we should be aware
  • Food: We will be providing a continental breakfast and either hot lunch or boxed lunch on Days 1 and 2 of the gathering. We will also provide dinner for all attendees on Wednesday evening and for INFRAMES leadership remaining in Durham on Thursday evening. The Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering will be providing a light lunch to all who attend the tour of the JSNN on Friday.
